FAQ's

What is DNA?

DNA is the acronym for a molecule called deoxyribonucleic acid. Often described as “the basic building block of life” or the “blueprint of the body”, it is the genetic material of all organisms, which is responsible for determining the inherited characteristics of an organism. Established at conception, when the father’s sperm cell fertilizes the mother’s egg cell, an individual inherits one-half of their DNA from each biological parent. In humans, DNA is found in most cells of the body. A large percentage of DNA is the same from person to person because similar biological processes must occur in all people. However, a small percentage of each person’s DNA is highly variable between different people, and every individual, with the exception of identical twins, has a unique DNA make-up that defines that person’s genetic characteristics. It is the person’s unique DNA make- up that allows DNA testing to accurately identify that individual.

What is DNA testing?

DNA testing analyzes an individual's genetic material to provide information about biological relationships, ancestry, health risks, and more.

How does the DNA collection process work?

The collection process is simple and painless. We typically use cheek swabs to collect DNA samples, which can be done in our office or at home using a kit we provide.

Do I need to be present for the DNA collection?

For legal tests, all parties involved must be present during sample collection. For non-legal tests, you can collect samples at home using our provided kits.

Can I use a DNA test to determine ancestry?

Yes, we offer ancestry DNA tests that can provide insights into your genetic heritage and ethnic background.

What types of DNA tests do you offer?

We offer various DNA testing services, including paternity testing, maternity testing, sibling testing, ancestry testing, and health-related genetic testing.

WHAT TYPES OF PATERNITY TESTS DO YOU OFFER?

Legal Paternity Test

This is our highly recommended test. If the child is under 18, it is strongly recommended that you choose this option. Results can be used in court to support any legal purpose, including: amending a birth certificate, child support orders, etc. Has the alleged father recently died?

We can use a FTA blood card sample or DNA sample from the deceased. The sample is usually collected by the coroner or funeral home director. There is an additional fee for using a FTA blood sample card or DNA sample from a deceased individual. The results to this test may be used for legal purposes, such as SSI or survivor benefits. If the alleged father is incarcerated or has been deceased for a long time (body is not accessible) but at least one of his parents are alive and available for testing, then a Grandparentage DNA Test is the best option. Paternity can be legally determined if grand paternity is proven.

Non-Legal Peace of Mind Paternity Test

If you just want to know the truth and you do not need a paternity test that is court admissible, then this is the best option for you What if I don’t want the alleged father to know about the test, or he refuses to come in for the test? If you have a toothbrush, eating utensils, toothpick or finger/toe nails from the alleged father, we can use those items to test for DNA. Please call us at 317-620-0770 to get pricing and directions on how to preserve the items for shipping to the lab.

How long does it take to receive results? Results are usually available within a few days, depending on the type of test and processing time. We’ll keep you informed throughout the process.

WHAT’S THE PROCESS TO GETTING A DNA TEST?

You book your appointment online or by phone, receive your welcome e-mail from the testing center administrator, show up for your appointment with Valid Government Issued Photo ID (all parties age 18 and over require ID), all parties involved will be swabbed, test will get shipped to our accredited laboratory, test results will come back within 2 business days, results will be e-mailed or read in office.

WHAT IF THE ALLEGED FATHER IS A MINOR?

If the alleged father is minor, consent from a legal guardian is required. This means the legal guardian will need to be at the appointment in order to give consent that the minor can be tested in our office.

CAN I RECEIVE MY TEST RESULTS BY PHONE?

No, we will not give you your results over the phone. Results will be sent by e-mail or one of the parties involved can come to the office to pick up the results, or there can be scheduled time for administrator to reveal test results in office with all parties present in the event mediation or counseling is needed.

Is the testing confidential?

Absolutely! We prioritize your privacy and ensure that all results and personal information are kept confidential in accordance with legal and ethical standards.

Why is accreditation important?

Accreditation is important because DNA testing services are not regulated in Canada. Voluntary accreditation through the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is one way for a laboratory to demonstrate that they have quality measures in place and staff, with the necessary education and training requirements, to perform DNA testing properly.
